Rhythmic Riding

A Somatic Experience

What is it?

First, Rhythmic Riding is not a pony ride, a riding lesson, or a recreational activity.

Rhythmic Riding is a somatic experience focused on bottom-up regulation. Bottom-up regulation works by addressing the body’s physical stress response first, before trying to change thoughts or emotions.

For example, imagine a friend receives upsetting news and begins to panic. Telling her to “calm down” is a top-down approach—asking the thinking part of the brain to control the stress response.

Helping her slow her breathing, feel her feet on the ground, and settle her body is a bottom-up approach. The goal is to regulate the physical stress response first so the thinking parts of the brain can become more accessible.

During Rhythmic Riding, the horse’s natural four-beat walking gait creates a slow, repetitive rocking motion—similar to the soothing rhythm of a caregiver gently rocking a baby.

Through this rhythmic movement and the supportive presence of the horse and facilitation team, participants are given an opportunity to slow down, connect with their bodies, and practice regulation in the moment.
