Psychotherapy with Horses
Trauma Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (TF-EAP) is informed by neurobiology and attachment theory which focuses on healing power of a connected, attuned, and mutually respectable relationship. To better explain this experiential approach allows the client to build a relationship with the horse with principles that empathize connection, regulation, and the well being of both parties involved (horse and human).
Compared to typical therapy that is online or in an office setting, Psychotherapy with Horses is a team approach involving a licensed mental health professional, equine professional and horse (or donkey). Sessions can take place out in the pasture, round pen, barn, or other spaces.
While most of the TF-EAP is ground work based (no riding), that does not mean that mounted work (rhythmic riding) is completely off the table depending on the clients treatment plan and goals.
Rhythmic Riding involves the client sitting on the horse at a walk with the Equine Professional leading the horse and mental health professional (*or instruction if Learning with Horses) side walking conversing with the client based on the treatment (*or learning) goals. The horse’s four beat gait at the walk rhythmically rocks the client (like a caregiver rocking their baby in the arms). The soothing rhythmic gate allows the client to regulate and access the upper regions of their brain to regulate or process trauma.
Our team is currently undergoing Natural Lifemanship certification process (currently trained at Level 1). We are hoping to officially launch end of 2026. We are working with a facility in Pelion, SC to host the program. Check back for more details!
